The long-anticipated dialogue between the National Consensus Commission and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) began this morning, marking a key step toward building political agreement around national reform initiatives.
The meeting started at 10:30am at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building, with a five-member BNP delegation participating in the talks.
The delegation includes BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Salahuddin Ahmed, Council member Ismail Jabiullah, party leader Moniruzzaman Khan, and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, the former general secretary of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association.
This dialogue is part of the commission’s broader mission to formulate a ‘July Charter’, which will incorporate consensus-based positions on the 166 reform recommendations proposed by six national commissions. This charter is intended to serve as the foundation for the next national election, aligning electoral processes with structural reforms.
Since its official formation on February 15, the National Consensus Commission has been meeting with various political parties and alliances. Ahead of today’s meeting, the commission had circulated a detailed spreadsheet to 39 political entities, soliciting their views on reform points related to electoral systems, constitutional changes, judiciary restructuring, decentralization, civil-military relations, and media freedom.
The BNP’s participation in today’s session is being viewed as a significant development in the quest for a peaceful and democratic transition, particularly amid growing demands for a restructured political order.
Further dialogues are expected in the coming.
